With the finishing up of the yarn for Fireside Socks, the wheel is empty. It will stay empty until The Tour begins. Let me take a minute to explain how The Tour works.
Tour de Fleece (rav link) runs from July 2nd to July 24th, the same time as the Tour de France. On July 11th and 18th the cyclists rest, we spinners do as well. These are good days to catch up on all the housework and errands that have been ignored during spinning days. July 20th is a day designated to spin something challenging. Why? Because on that day the cyclists will be pedaling through the mountains and five mountain passes!
There is a main group on Ravelry and teams often have their own group pages. You can join as many teams as you like, or none at all. Pictures are posted daily and there may be prizes involved. You set you own goals and they can be as varied as, spin a sweaters worth, or spin an entire fleece, or spin a yarn that can be used. The main goal is to have some fun.
This year I have joined two groups, Southern Cross Fibre and Ennea Collective, and my goal is the same as last year, spin every day. I will be out of town for three days right in the middle of The Tour. Luckily it is a car trip so I plan to strap my wheel in for the drive.
So what am I going to spin?
Time Lord and Gunslinger from Southern Cross Fibre. These will be September and October's handspun socks. If this is all I manage to spin during The Tour, I will be happy.
Charred and Tendril, also from SCF. I have plans for this to become a design that I will submit to Ennea.
For challenge day I will work on this, a 50/50 merino/silk from A Verb For Keeping Warm. I do not think I have ever spun anything with such a high silk content, it will be a challenge. This yarn will become Lara.
That is that. It is unlikely I will get through all this fiber. Last year I planned poorly and had to order more fiber towards the end of The Tour, I am not taking any chances this year.
