Our family is very environmental conscience. The thermostat is set at 62 during the day and turned all the way down at night. Husband commutes by bus, the "kids" do not own cars, they carry buss passes, we have been buying organic since before organic was regulated, no pesticides in the yard, we purchase recycled building materials, and husband recycles used nails. We are not just green, we are dark green. But I have a dirty little secret.
Try as I might to do to the right thing, to "Eat like I mean it and drink like I a give a damn". There is a monkey on my back, and its name is San Pallegrino. I haul cases of the stuff home from Costco and feel the weight of guilt when I drop a bottle into the recycling bin, knowing that bottle of water traveled all the way from Italy only to be tossed aside. I tried to quit, really I did. In the end I told myself that life is short and we do so much, and really, what harm is a little bubble water? I know, pathetic.
Lately I have been thinking that it is time to cut the San Pellegrino cord for good. The only way this is going to work is to replace my beloved bubble water with different, more eco friendly, less guilt inducing bubble water. Enter Soda Stream.

This little fellow uses glass bottles, bottles that do not get tossed into the recycle bin after one use. I have no desire, for flavors, just plain water. One of the things I like about San Pallegrino is that the bubbles are soft and round. Other bubble water has bubbles that are small and sharp. The Penguin lets you control the amount of fizz in the water and this makes me think I have a chance at nice fat bubbles.
Do you have one of these gizmo's? Ever used one at a friend's house? It is an investment and I want to be sure.

I have not used this one, but when I was a kid and visited my grandmother in South Africa she had a very similar machine! We would make our soda water and then add flavoured syrups. I loved it!!

I bought the FountainJet a couple years ago, and it was the best gift I could have gotten for my family! We figure we go through 2 liters of seltzer a day, so we're NOT throwing all that plastic in the recycle. The bottles it uses are very heavy duty plastic - not breakable; good around our house. I highly recommend this.
