Spring is on it's way around here. The squirrels are running along fence tops, stopping to flick their bushy tails, and the call of the Northern Flicker can heard loud and clear.
The loudest Northern Flicker is the one that gets the girl, so their calls travel for quite a distance. These birds have developed an even louder way to gets the attention of the ladies, and it involves chimney caps. The birds are in the woodpecker family and have found that drilling on the chimney cap is very, very loud. When they are pecking away at the top of your chimney it is annoying, when you hear them pecking away at the neighbors house, it is hilarious.
