First up, Flappies. Pictured is my own pattern for flap top mittens. This is my third pair and I they are great fun to knit.
The yarn for this particular pair is yarn that I never would have purchased at the yarn store. Too expensive. But oh boy, is it lovely. The skein shown above was the February installment of the Skein of the Month award from Storey Publishing. Swoon, by Fiesta Yarns, superfine merino and silk. I am not sure how this yarn is plyed, but it is bouncy and soft and an all around dream to knit with. After weaving in ends I had 10 yards of yarn left. I made this pair for Oldest Daughter who has long, slender hands. If I were to make a pair for Husband I would need another skein. That would make these a $70 pair of mittens. Not likely.
As you may know, I knit cotton hand towels and wash clothes as my emergency knitting. As a rule it takes many months of waiting in lines and for late kids to finish a project. This project surprised me in many ways, it flew off the needles, I could not put it down. It even came in from its cubby in the Jeep so that I could continue working.
The yarn is Blue Sky Skinny Dyed organic cotton. The skein was July's Skein of the Month (see above). The color is so white, so pure, and the cotton is so soft and easy to work with. There was plenty of yarn for a regular sized hand towel, maybe even enough for two face cloths. At a retail price of $9.00, I will be using this again.
Lynnefritz asked about my wee tiny sock blocker. Here it is.
Please excuse its dingy appearance, it has been at camp all week. The sock blocker was purchased almost two years ago from Looy Ewe. The sock was knit using leftover Koigo. It can be found clipped onto my GS knife.
At camp it is attached to a lanyard and hangs around my neck. At home it is in my purse where it is easily retrieved whenever someone says, "Does anyone have a pocketknife?" This particular knife also has a bottle opener (love Girl Scouts!), which makes it a lifesaver for Husband.
