another day another sock

If only that were true everyday, or even most days.  Yesterday was special.  In the morning most of the family piled into the car and headed up to hike Mt. Pilchuck, only myself and Youngest Son were left to tend the house.  I really did intend to tend to the house.  I had plans to do housework, and laundry, and prepare my weekly write up for Patons.  Instead I knit.  I pulled out the yarn for Fireside Socks, chose two bold colors that would show up well against the grey and cast on.  I am using a fatter yarn and size 4 needles and before I knew it

 

 

a sock was born. 

I am very happy with it.  The cuff is a bit loose, but that is what happens when you use fatter yarn. 

The toe is a new one for me and one I think will work well for Husband.  I usually make a round toe for his socks because he seems to wear right at the decreases on a standard toe.  This toe does the decreases 5 stitches away from the needle ends.  I really like it!

I would like to think that I will cast right on for sock #2, but there is a bit of a log jam.  When I began sock #1, I had this big cake of yarn and thought for sure I would have enough for socks.

 After knitting just one, I have this much remaining.  Not going to make it.  I do have more fiber to spin, so it is not a big problem, but there is already a project on the wheel.  First I have to finish the project on the wheel, then spin more yarn for the socks, then knit sock #2.  Log jam.
